System comparison

Schluter, Wedi, and Liquid Shower Waterproofing Compared

There is no credible one-word answer to the best waterproofing system. Sheet membrane, waterproof foam board, and liquid-applied methods can all produce durable showers when the selected products form an approved assembly and the installer controls the details.

The short answer

What matters most

Choose the installer and documented method together. Sheet systems depend on bonded overlaps. Board systems depend on sealed seams, fasteners, and penetrations. Liquid systems depend on preparation, coverage, thickness, coats, and cure. Every system still needs correct slope and drain integration.

Sheet membrane systems

A bonded sheet membrane provides a factory-controlled membrane thickness. Seams and transitions rely on the overlap and bonding details specified by the manufacturer. Build-up at corners and multiple overlaps must be planned so the tile plane remains manageable.

Schluter KERDI is one example. Its complete shower method includes compatible drains, bands, corners, seals, trays, and other components. The value is the connected assembly, not the orange color.

Waterproof foam board systems

Waterproof building panels can combine substrate and waterproof layer, reducing weight and avoiding a separate field membrane over the panel face. The panel is only one part of the work. Seams, fasteners, penetrations, transitions, and the drain still require the system's sealant or reinforcement details.

Wedi and Schluter KERDI-BOARD are examples with different approved accessories and installation instructions. Components should not be casually interchanged because they look similar.

Liquid-applied membranes

Liquids can conform cleanly around complex shapes and avoid sheet overlap buildup. Their performance depends on substrate preparation and achieving the required cured thickness everywhere, including corners and changes of plane. Pinholes, thin areas, premature recoating, and incomplete curing are workmanship risks.

Products within the same brand can have different coat, fabric, cure, and flood-test requirements. The current data sheet for the exact product controls.

The comparison contractors should be able to explain

Ask why the selected method fits the substrate, drain, steam exposure if any, tile, job conditions, and installer workflow. Then ask for the exact product list, current instructions, water-test plan, and warranty terms.

A mixed system can be legitimate only when manufacturers approve the transition and responsibility is clear. A bucket of one brand, a drain from another, and improvised sealant are not automatically a tested assembly.

Questions homeowners ask

Is sheet membrane always safer than liquid?

No. Sheet material controls membrane thickness, while liquid avoids some seam buildup. Both can fail at details or through poor installation.

Which system does Parsons use?

Parsons commonly builds with complete Schluter components and documents the work before tile. The final specification still needs to match the project and current manufacturer requirements.
